Chapter Eleven

Placentia had a town square, which was an open area most often used as a farmer’s market. However, on Saturday the square was hosting the town meeting. Percy had scheduled the meeting after teatime but before drinking time in hopes of drawing more participants. The strategy was effective, as nearly all of the Englishmen and a good portion of the Irish showed up. The two groups stood on opposite sides of the square, which made Percy wonder if they would work together. Patrick Anderson was there with his son Tommy and Captain Pritchard was also present, though he paced around nervously, likely wanting to get back to Foxhaven. Dr. Kelly also showed up with Rosie. Although a few other women stood nearby, Percy noticed Florence Pritchard wasn’t one of them. Probably minding the pub, he told himself, though he wondered if there was another reason.

Lieutenant Stevens had put together a stage from several planks and heavy crates so that Percy could address the crowd. “Good luck, Sir,” he whispered as Percy took the stage.

“Gentlemen, thank you for coming.” Percy surveyed the crowd, noting that most of those in attendance were in their late teens to late forties in age, and all looked capable of fighting. “As you know, England is currently at war with France.”

“What’s that to do with us?” someone shouted.

“What it has to do with you,” Percy answered, “is protecting your families from French incursion. As I’m sure all of you are aware, France has seized this territory in the past, and we fear they may try to do the same now. I’ve been assured it is unlikely that Napoleon himself will come….”

“Then what are we worried about?” another man shouted.

Percy couldn’t tell which side was asking, but he suspected it was the Irish side. “If you’ll let me explain, please. I do not wish to alarm anyone, but General Clinton has expressed concern that France may try to retake St. John’s, and by extension, the town of Placentia.” He paused a moment to see if his statement had any effect on the townsfolk. When no one said anything, he continued. “I pray this doesn’t happen, but it is always best to be prepared in case it does. Now, I need a good two dozen or so volunteers.” Again, no one said anything. “You will need to bring your pistols and hunting rifles. We’ll have regular practice at Castle Hill once weekly. We’ll also look at town fortifications, defense, and evacuation of women and children in the event an invasion does take place.”

Patrick Anderson spoke up. “Colonel, as I’ve said before, most of us are fishermen and this is our busy season.”

“Right,” Percy agreed, “which is why I’m only asking for a few hours, once a week.”

“What day then,” Patrick asked.

“I thought Sunday might be a good day,” Percy suggested, quickly adding, “after church, of course.”

“I thought Sunday was a day of rest,” an Englishman said dryly.

This time Cormac spoke. “Yes, in the Old Testament. But Jesus reminded us that work may continue on the Lord’s day if it’s necessary.
